Our pause between FDE Updates has been much too long. We suffered shock and writers block in the aftermath of the most horrendous election in our memory. We also took time to consult with some of our most devoted readers on where to go next in terms of FDE’s focus. Our conclusion, for starters, is to begin by providing special sections in Update on two issues – fledgling threats to civil and political freedoms and the rise of populism, most particularly as it engages the “working class” (broadly defined}. We fear both and cringe at their potential threat to our democracy
For now, we will offer readers articles, reports, analyses – whatever we come across that seems symptomatic of dangerous trends. We hope to create a Freedoms Watch and Populism Monitor that will put these two phenomenon under as much intense scrutiny as we can muster. To our mind, developments on these two fronts will shape our democracy for years to come.
We also plan to seriously upgrade distribution of the FDE Update posts that make it up. This means getting serious about social media – Facebook at least, and possibly Twitter. So, keep an eye out for these changes.
We apologize for the length of the posts of this Update, but we can’t lay out our plan in 140 characters. We hope you will indulge us, and promise future treatments will be shorter. But, if you don’t want to read all of the posts, just look at the links. By themselves they are worth it.
